Dear Friends of APEC,
Warm greetings to you all!It is with great pleasure that I welcome you as Economic Committee (EC) Chair to the 2008 APEC Workshop on Government Performance and Results Management (WGPRM) in Chinese Taipei.
This is an excellent initiative and I thank all those involved, especially sponsor Chinese Taipei and co-sponsor New Zealand, for making this vital Workshop happen, which will be of great benefit to all APEC economies.
Since 2004, the EC has had a mandate from APEC Leaders to promote the advantages of structural reform, including improved public sector governance structures in APEC economies. This Workshop on Government Performance and Results Management has pursued this mandate.By recognising the importance of government performance and results management to structural reform this Workshop is invaluable to our goals.
I hope this Workshop will encourage an understanding amongst officials from around the Asia-Pacific region and increase the awareness of better planning and practices in government, as well as fostering the exchange of ideas and need for improved performance evaluation and results management in the public sector. There are sessions on government strategic planning; good practice in planning and objective setting of government agencies; the monitoring and measuring performance and many more.
I would like to express my sincere thanks again to Chinese Taipei as sponsor for hosting and organising this Workshop, and to New Zealand as co-sponsor. I look forward to meeting with you all and being part of the discussions and ideas on how to enhance government performance and result management in APEC economies.
